People have always eaten outside, but picnics as an educated pleasure probably originated in France at the end of the 17th century among the upper classes who liked to go on country trips. The word picnic comes from the French pique nique. Picnic is popular in large parts of the world, and the term is used to mean eating outdoors. Ideally, it should take place in a beautiful location, such as in a park, by a lake or somewhere with an interesting view. It is also common to have a picnic in connection with the celebration of various occasions.
